Ukraine Air Raid Alert App Hacked, Users Receive False Radiation Warnings

Ukraine’s national air raid alert system was apparently compromised late Sunday, with users across the country receiving false warnings of nuclear, chemical, and street fighting threats, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. The incident triggered widespread concern as sirens sounded and notifications appeared on the widely used Air Alert app.

The Ukrainian Air Force announced on its official Telegram channel that the Air Alert application had “probably been subjected to hostile interference”. The message emphasized, “There is no radiation threat! Stay calm and follow our updates on our channel.” The Air Force urged citizens to disregard the alarming notifications and rely on official channels for accurate information.

According to reports, the app displayed a series of alarming alerts, including warnings of a nuclear hazard, a chemical hazard, and street fighting in various cities, including the capital Kyiv. At 22:49 local time, users received a notification stating, “Street fighting threat. Street fighting is taking place in Kyiv. Don’t go outside.” These alerts were followed by a sequence of “all clear” messages, each linked to the previous threats, individually declaring each danger had passed.

The Ukrainian Central Intelligence Agency also confirmed a failure in the app, advising the public to use alternative sources to verify information about air strikes and potential threats. Several regional governors echoed these warnings, assuring residents that there was no actual threat and that the system had been compromised.

The Air Alert app, developed in partnership between Ukraine’s Digital Transformation Ministry and security technology company Ajax Systems, has played a critical role in warning civilians of incoming missile and drone attacks since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. The app is widely used across Ukraine, and its alerts are considered a primary source of information during air raids.

Ukrainians have become accustomed to responding to the app’s notifications, often seeking shelter in metro stations and basements when sirens sound. The sudden appearance of false radiation and street fighting alerts caused confusion and anxiety among residents, particularly in Kyiv, where the threat of nuclear or chemical incidents is taken extremely seriously due to the ongoing conflict.

Officials have not publicly identified the source of the hack but referred to it as “hostile interference”. The Ukrainian Air Force and intelligence services are investigating the breach, while urging the public to remain vigilant and rely on official updates.

There have been no reports of physical incidents or attacks corresponding to the false alerts. Authorities have reassured the population that there is no radiation or chemical threat, and that the situation is under control.

Why it matters

The apparent hacking of Ukraine’s air raid alert system highlights the vulnerability of critical civilian infrastructure to cyberattacks during wartime. The Air Alert app, developed by the Digital Transformation Ministry and Ajax Systems, is a vital tool for millions of Ukrainians, and its compromise could have endangered public safety by spreading panic or causing people to ignore future genuine alerts.

This incident comes amid ongoing Russian military operations in Ukraine and follows repeated warnings from Ukrainian officials about the risk of cyberwarfare targeting government and civilian systems. The Air Force’s rapid response and clear communication helped prevent widespread panic, but the event underscores the need for robust cybersecurity measures and public awareness to counter disinformation and hostile interference.

As Ukraine continues to defend itself against both physical and digital threats, the integrity of emergency communication systems remains a priority for authorities. The investigation into the source and method of the hack is ongoing, and officials are urging citizens to verify alerts through multiple trusted channels while improvements to security protocols are implemented.
