Chinese tech giant Huawei has unveiled HarmonyOS Next, a completely homegrown operating system designed to challenge Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. The company aims to position this new system as the third major player in the global mobile operating system market.
Huawei CEO Richard Yu announced during the Guangzhou 2024 Auto Show that the company’s new Mate 70 series will be officially launched on November 26. The series will include Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro, Mate 70 Pro+, and Mate 70 RS Ultimate models, all of which will operate on HarmonyOS Next. This move is seen as part of Huawei’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its technological independence following U.S. sanctions.
From Sanctions to Success:
This bold step comes in the wake of U.S. sanctions imposed in 2019, which cut Huawei’s access to Google Mobile Services. According to Paul Triolo, a technology expert at Albright Stonebridge Group:
“This represents a significant milestone for China, born out of fears that the U.S. could cut off everything.”
Huawei’s efforts to create its own ecosystem have paid off. The company reported a 30% increase in sales during the first nine months of 2024 compared to the previous year, highlighting how the sanctions intended to weaken Huawei have instead strengthened its technological capabilities.
A Leap in Technology:
The Mate 70 series is powered by a domestically produced processor capable of achieving near-5G speeds. This processor, also featured in last year’s Mate 60 series, was initially dismissed by many in Washington as unattainable. However, Huawei’s achievement demonstrates its commitment to remaining at the forefront of technological innovation.
