North Korea to Resume Border Propaganda Loudspeakers Amid Rising Tensions

North Korea is preparing to restart anti-South Korea propaganda broadcasts along the heavily fortified border, with officials in Pyongyang saying loudspeakers will be operational within days. The move comes as tensions between the two Koreas escalate following recent border incidents and renewed accusations from both sides.

Kim Yo Jong, a senior North Korean official and sister of leader Kim Jong Un, announced that the country will place loudspeakers along the entire border and warned that the broadcasts could begin imminently. According to multiple reports, North Korea is also considering deploying additional tactical weapons to the frontier as part of what it calls “preemptive and suppressive measures.”

The latest escalation follows mine explosions last month that injured three South Korean soldiers near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). South Korea has formally accused the North of planting the mines and has demanded an apology and removal of other explosive devices. North Korea denies responsibility, calling the incident a fabrication by Seoul.

“A grave situation is prevailing along the southern border due to the reckless behavior of the ROK military gangsters,” Kim Yo Jong said in a statement, using the official name for South Korea, the Republic of Korea. She added that North Korea’s military is “taking new positions” and that the resumption of loudspeaker broadcasts is a “just measure” in response to recent developments.

Loudspeaker broadcasts have long been used by both Koreas as a form of psychological warfare during periods of heightened confrontation. The broadcasts typically include news, music, and messages critical of the other side, and have previously triggered military standoffs. In 2015, a similar incident involving land mines led to a sharp escalation and a brief exchange of artillery fire after South Korea resumed its own loudspeaker operations.

South Korea’s government, led by President Lee Jae Myung, has urged dialogue and warned it will take “proportionate measures” if North Korea resumes its propaganda campaign. Since taking office, Lee’s administration had halted its own loudspeaker broadcasts as part of efforts to improve inter-Korean relations, a move that was initially reciprocated by Pyongyang.

Recent months have seen a deterioration in relations, with North Korea increasing its border fortifications and stepping up weapons testing activities. Analysts say the renewed propaganda broadcasts risk undoing recent diplomatic gains and raising the risk of further military incidents along the border.

As of today, North Korea has not specified an exact date for when the loudspeakers will be activated, but officials say preparations are nearly complete. The situation remains tense, with both sides on high alert and the potential for further escalation if the broadcasts go ahead as planned.
