UK Charges Two Men Over Iran-Linked Plot at US-Used RAF Fairford Airbase

British authorities have charged two men with serious national security offenses following an alleged Iran-linked plot targeting RAF Fairford, a military airbase in England used by the United States. The charges, announced today by the Crown Prosecution Service, come after a high-profile security incident that prompted the US to withdraw its bombers from the base.

According to prosecutors, Mohmed Abdulkarim, a British-Iranian dual national aged 24, faces charges of assisting a foreign intelligence service, specifically Iran’s intelligence agency. Nouman Essghir, also 24 and a British citizen, has been charged with entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the United Kingdom.

The incident occurred in late September at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, southwestern England. Armed police and army bomb-disposal teams responded to the area on September 27, when Essghir was arrested outside the base, according to statements from UK police and prosecutors. Abdulkarim was arrested separately as part of the same investigation.

The Crown Prosecution Service stated that the charges followed a Counter Terrorism Policing investigation into the events at RAF Fairford. Prosecutors allege that Abdulkarim engaged in conduct likely to materially assist a foreign intelligence service in carrying out UK-related activities, while Essghir is accused of entering the base for a purpose prejudicial to national security.

RAF Fairford has played a significant role in recent months as a staging ground for US bombers conducting strikes on Iran during the ongoing conflict. The base is operated by the Royal Air Force but is regularly used by the US Air Force for strategic operations in Europe and the Middle East.

Following the arrests, US President Donald Trump announced that American long-range bombers had been withdrawn from RAF Fairford due to a threat “linked to Iran.” British authorities have directly linked Tehran to the incident, although Iran’s ambassador to the UK has denied any involvement.

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing in the UK, said, “We have seen a range of incidents in recent months that we believe have been directed by the Iranian state, and as the director general of MI5 said just the other week, we are working together to intervene, identify and respond to that threat.”

Prime Minister Andy Burnham also stated last week that activity at RAF Fairford was likely coordinated in Iran, underscoring the government’s concerns about foreign-directed plots on UK soil. The Crown Prosecution Service has emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and no further details about the specific nature of the alleged plot have been released.

Why it matters

The charges mark a significant escalation in tensions between the UK and Iran, highlighting growing concerns about foreign intelligence operations targeting critical military infrastructure in Europe. The direct link made by UK authorities between the suspects and Iran’s intelligence service underscores the seriousness with which the British government is treating the incident.

The withdrawal of US bombers from RAF Fairford, as confirmed by President Trump, demonstrates the immediate operational impact of the security threat. RAF Fairford’s role as a launch point for strikes on Iran has made it a focal point for both UK and US military strategy, and any compromise of its security has far-reaching implications for allied operations in the region.

Officials, including Assistant Commissioner Taylor and Prime Minister Burnham, have cited this case as part of a broader pattern of suspected Iranian-directed activity in the UK. The ongoing investigation and heightened security posture at sensitive sites reflect the increasing challenge posed by foreign intelligence services and the need for close cooperation between UK and US authorities in responding to such threats.
