Israel election deadlocked as exit polls show no clear winner

Israel’s parliamentary election has ended in a political deadlock, with exit polls indicating that neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party nor opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot’s bloc has secured a clear majority. The closely watched vote, held amid record turnout, leaves the country’s political future uncertain as both camps fall short of the 61 seats needed to form a government.

According to exit polls reported by multiple sources, Eisenkot’s bloc is projected to win 52 or 53 seats, while Netanyahu’s Likud and its allies are expected to take around 50 seats. Arab parties, which remain unaligned with either major bloc, are predicted to secure between 17 and 18 seats in the 120-member Knesset.

The official results will be determined only after all ballots are counted, but the early figures suggest a complex coalition-building process ahead. Voter turnout reached 77.7%, the highest in more than two decades, reflecting intense public interest in the outcome and the country’s political direction.

Some Israeli media outlets, including the pro-Netanyahu Channel 14, projected a slightly stronger showing for Netanyahu’s camp, claiming it could reach up to 60 seats. However, the majority of exit polls and independent analysts indicate that both leading blocs remain short of the threshold required to govern.

Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar party, has publicly ruled out forming a government with the unaligned Arab parties, further complicating his path to a majority despite his bloc’s narrow lead. This stance limits coalition options and raises the possibility of protracted negotiations or even a return to the polls if no agreement can be reached.

Yohanan Plesner, president of the Israel Democracy Institute, described the exit poll results as a major defeat for Netanyahu’s outgoing coalition, which held 68 seats in the previous Knesset but now appears to have lost significant ground. Despite this, Plesner noted that Eisenkot had not emerged as a clear winner, underscoring the uncertainty facing Israel’s political system.

The election comes at a time of heightened political tension in Israel, with voters divided over issues such as security, the economy, and the country’s relationship with its Arab minority. The fragmented results reflect deep divisions within Israeli society and the challenges facing any prospective government.

Coalition negotiations are expected to begin once the final results are confirmed. If neither side can assemble a majority, Israel could face yet another round of elections, continuing a cycle of political instability that has persisted in recent years.

Why it matters

The deadlocked outcome of Israel’s election signals continued uncertainty for the country’s leadership and policymaking. With neither Gadi Eisenkot’s bloc nor Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud able to secure a majority, the risk of prolonged coalition talks or another election looms large. This instability could affect Israel’s ability to address pressing domestic and regional challenges, including security concerns and economic issues.

The record voter turnout, reported at 77.7%, highlights the high stakes and deep engagement among Israeli citizens. However, the fragmentation of the vote—reflected in the significant gains for unaligned Arab parties and the sharp drop in seats for Netanyahu’s former coalition—underscores the difficulty of forming a stable government. Eisenkot’s refusal to partner with Arab parties, as reported by France 24 and other sources, further narrows the options for coalition-building.

Observers such as Yohanan Plesner from the Israel Democracy Institute have described the result as a setback for Netanyahu, whose coalition has lost substantial ground. Yet, with no clear winner, Israel faces the prospect of ongoing political paralysis, which could hinder its ability to respond to both internal and external pressures in the coming weeks.
