Flights Disrupted Across East Asia as Typhoon Champi Approaches Taiwan

Hundreds of flights were cancelled across East Asia today as Typhoon Champi approached Taiwan, forcing authorities and airlines to take emergency measures and disrupting travel for thousands of passengers. The powerful storm is expected to brush Taiwan’s northeastern coast before moving toward mainland China, with its effects already being felt across the region.

Taiwan issued a land warning for Typhoon Champi and cancelled more than 100 flights, most of them domestic, according to official statements. Airlines including China Airlines and Tigerair Taiwan suspended services between Taiwan and Okinawa. Similar disruptions were reported in Japan, where major carriers cancelled over 100 flights, also primarily domestic routes, as the storm’s outer bands brought strong winds and heavy rain.

According to local authorities, Typhoon Champi is forecast to make landfall on Friday, bringing gusts of up to 173 kilometers per hour (107 mph) and a storm radius of 320 kilometers, large enough to affect the entire island of Taiwan. Taiwanese officials have urged residents to avoid coasts and mountainous areas, and have begun evacuating people living near a landslide dam on the northeast coast that is at risk of breaching during the storm.

Airlines in Hong Kong and other parts of East Asia also cancelled or rescheduled flights, particularly those connecting Taiwan and Okinawa, as the region braced for the typhoon’s impact. Operational adjustments were made to air traffic schedules, with several carriers announcing further cancellations as the storm’s path became clearer.

Typhoon Champi’s approach comes at a time when East Asia is still recovering from previous severe weather events earlier this year. The region’s vulnerability to typhoons is heightened during this season, with Taiwan and Japan frequently facing disruptions to transport and infrastructure.

Authorities in Taiwan have stressed the importance of public safety, advising people to monitor official updates and follow evacuation orders where necessary. Emergency services have been placed on high alert, particularly in areas at risk of flooding or landslides.

In Japan, officials warned that heavy rainfall and strong winds could cause further travel disruptions and urged residents to prepare for possible power outages and transport delays. The Japan Meteorological Agency is closely monitoring the typhoon’s trajectory as it continues to move northwest.

As of this afternoon, Typhoon Champi is expected to weaken slightly before passing close to Taiwan’s northeastern coast, but forecasters caution that the storm’s size and intensity could still cause significant damage. The situation remains fluid, with further flight cancellations and evacuations possible depending on the storm’s development.

Authorities across East Asia are continuing to monitor the typhoon’s progress and have indicated that updates will be provided as conditions evolve over the coming hours.
