France confirms first human case of Shamonda virus in immunocompromised patient

French health authorities have reported the first documented human case of the Shamonda virus, a pathogen previously known to affect livestock, in a severely immunocompromised patient who died earlier this month in Lyon. Officials from the health and agriculture ministries stated today that there is no identified health risk to the general public.

The patient, who was treated at Hospices Civils de Lyon, was confirmed to have been infected with the Shamonda virus, according to statements from French authorities and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The individual died in early October, and authorities say neurological complications observed prior to death were very likely linked to the infection, although the exact contribution of the virus to the fatal outcome has not been conclusively established.

This case marks the first time the Shamonda virus has been detected in a human, according to the French Ministry of Agriculture. The ministries described the infection as an “exceptional case involving a severely immunocompromised patient,” and emphasized that no sustained human-to-human transmission has been observed.

The Shamonda virus is part of a group of viruses transmitted by biting midges and mainly affects cattle, sheep, and goats. Sporadic infections in small ruminants and horses have also been reported in France this year. The virus was first detected in European livestock this summer, after decades of circulation in Africa and Asia without any previously known human cases.

French authorities believe the patient likely contracted the virus through a midge bite in eastern France, where the virus was circulating among animals during the spring and summer. The ministries have notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the case, in line with international health regulations.

In their joint statement, the health and agriculture ministries reiterated that “no health risk to the general public has been identified at this time.” The ECDC is monitoring the situation, but officials stressed that the infection appears to be isolated and related to the patient’s underlying severe immunosuppression.

The discovery has prompted increased surveillance of livestock and vector populations in affected regions, with veterinary and public health authorities coordinating efforts to track any further spread. There have been no reports of additional human cases or evidence of transmission beyond the initial patient.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to better understand the circumstances of the infection and to determine whether additional precautionary measures are needed. The case remains under close observation by national and European health agencies.
