Storm Boelo set to batter UK with strong winds and rain as power cuts persist

Severe weather is set to continue across the UK as Storm Boelo approaches, bringing the risk of further disruption to areas already hit hard by Storm Austen. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for wind covering much of Scotland from 9pm Saturday through Sunday night, with yellow wind warnings also in place for Northern Ireland, Scotland, and northern England. Forecasters warn that the latest storm could bring gusts of up to 70mph (112km/h) and heavy rain, increasing the risk of flooding, travel disruption, and additional power outages.

According to the Met Office, the most intense winds are expected in exposed coastal locations, where gusts could reach up to 80mph (129km/h). The amber warning highlights a high likelihood of damage to trees and buildings, flying debris, and bridge closures. Public transport services remain operational, but some train cancellations are expected. Motorists are being urged to avoid unnecessary journeys, as surface water and spray could create hazardous driving conditions on faster roads and motorways.

The arrival of Storm Boelo comes just a day after Storm Austen caused widespread disruption across southern and central parts of the UK. The National Grid reported that more than 60,000 properties had power restored since the onset of Austen, but over 10,000 homes remained without electricity as of Friday evening. Emergency crews have been working to repair damaged infrastructure, but further outages are likely as Boelo moves in.

Storm Austen made landfall overnight, bringing wind gusts in excess of 75mph, toppling trees, and causing significant travel disruption. Schools in the Channel Islands and parts of Cornwall were closed or operated on reduced hours. In the southwest, more than 16,000 homes lost power, and waves crashed over coastal defences, prompting warnings from local authorities.

The Met Office has warned that the combination of saturated ground from recent rainfall and the arrival of another powerful storm system increases the risk of localised flooding. Residents in affected areas are being advised to secure loose items, stay indoors where possible during the peak of the storm, and monitor official updates.

Transport authorities have announced that while most services are running, some train routes in Scotland and northern England will be suspended or delayed due to the risk of fallen trees and debris on the tracks. Road closures are also possible, particularly in areas prone to flooding or where high winds pose a risk to high-sided vehicles.

Officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and to heed weather warnings as conditions are expected to deteriorate through Saturday night and into Sunday. The situation remains fluid, with further updates anticipated as Storm Boelo tracks across the UK.

With power restoration efforts ongoing and additional severe weather forecast, it remains unclear when full services will be restored to affected communities. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have pledged to deploy additional resources as needed to respond to any emergencies arising from the latest storm.
