Catholic leaders step back from Trump after Oval Office prayer video surfaces

Several prominent Catholic leaders are distancing themselves from the Trump administration following the release of a video showing a prayer session in the Oval Office, according to statements from church officials and recent media reports. The video, posted by a White House official, featured Denver Archbishop James Golka leading a group of bishops in prayer over President Donald Trump.

The incident has sparked controversy within the Catholic hierarchy, especially as the United States approaches the midterm elections. While the prayer took place at the White House, both Archbishop Golka and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) have emphasized that the event was not intended as a political endorsement and was not organized by the bishops’ main representative body.

Archbishop Golka, who led the prayer on October 22, told the Denver Catholic newspaper that the White House video was never meant as an endorsement of President Trump or his administration. According to Golka, his participation was not coordinated as a political statement, and he expressed regret over any misunderstanding caused by the footage.

The USCCB, which serves as the national assembly of Catholic bishops in the United States, has also moved to clarify its position. Spokesperson Chieko Noguchi stated that the conference neither organized nor had any affiliation with the Oval Office meeting. Noguchi further explained that contact between American bishops and the White House would normally be managed through the conference’s government affairs office, but this protocol was not followed in this instance.

Some senior officials within the USCCB were reportedly surprised to learn about the prayer event only after the video began circulating online. According to reports from The Letters from Leo, several bishops and church officials have described the incident as egregious, with none offering a justification for how the event was handled.

The video, which shows twelve bishops gathered around President Trump with White House Faith Office senior adviser Paula White-Cain present, has triggered internal discussions within the Catholic community. A petition has been launched by some Catholic groups, urging the bishops involved to apologize to both the faithful and Pope Leo XIV.

While Archbishop Golka has offered an account of how he came to be at the White House, he stopped short of a full apology, according to his interview with the Denver Catholic. The broader Catholic leadership has maintained a cautious stance, seeking to avoid any perception of political alignment as the midterm elections approach.

This distancing comes amid heightened sensitivity around the intersection of faith and politics in the United States, particularly as religious endorsements or appearances can be interpreted as political statements in the current polarized climate.

Why it matters

The response from Catholic leaders highlights the complex relationship between religious organizations and political figures, especially during election cycles. By clarifying that the Oval Office prayer was not an endorsement, the USCCB and Archbishop Golka are seeking to maintain the Church’s neutrality and avoid alienating members of the Catholic community who may hold diverse political views.

This episode also underscores the challenges religious leaders face in navigating invitations from political leaders. The surprise among senior bishops and the subsequent calls for accountability reflect ongoing debates within the Church about the appropriate boundaries between faith and politics in public life.

With the midterms approaching, the incident may influence how religious organizations engage with political figures in the coming weeks. Observers will be watching for further statements from the USCCB and other faith leaders, as well as any impact on Catholic voter sentiment as the election nears.
