SpaceX Secures $40 Billion Debt Deal to Expand AI Chip Capacity

SpaceX has closed a $40 billion debt financing deal to purchase advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) for its artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to company chief executive Elon Musk. The announcement was made on Sunday via Musk’s official account on X, drawing immediate attention from the technology and finance sectors due to the unprecedented scale of the investment.

The financing will enable SpaceX to acquire large volumes of GPUs, which are essential for training and operating powerful AI models. Musk highlighted that the deal was made possible by SpaceX’s investment-grade credit status and robust revenue streams from its Starlink satellite internet and rocket launch businesses, distinguishing the company from newer AI cloud providers that have struggled to secure similar funding.

According to sources cited by CNBC and Bloomberg, the debt is primarily callable, and the funds are expected to be used to purchase GPUs from leading suppliers, with delivery anticipated in the first and second quarters of 2027. Musk did not specify the exact delivery dates or the suppliers involved, but the move is widely seen as a major step in scaling up SpaceX’s AI computing capabilities.

The deal comes amid a surge in demand for advanced chips and data center infrastructure, as technology companies worldwide invest heavily to support the rapid growth of artificial intelligence applications. The capital requirements for such projects have soared, with SpaceX’s $40 billion deal marking one of the largest technology infrastructure financings in recent memory.

SpaceX has rapidly expanded its AI division, known internally as “Super Intelligence” or SI. The segment has become the company’s largest business unit, with third-quarter revenue reportedly rising ninefold year-on-year to $7.56 billion, according to the latest earnings release. The AI division also posted its first profit in the third quarter, reflecting strong demand for computing power.

In addition to powering its own AI initiatives, SpaceX has begun selling computing capacity from its Memphis data center to external AI labs and major technology companies. This diversification of revenue streams has helped the company secure favorable terms for the debt deal, as noted by Musk and industry analysts.

Musk also contrasted SpaceX’s position with that of so-called “neocloud” companies—newer firms that focus on providing cloud-based AI computing power—arguing that many have faced increased scrutiny and limited access to debt markets due to their lack of diversified revenue and heavy borrowing.

Industry observers note that the scale of SpaceX’s investment could accelerate the development of larger and more sophisticated AI models, given the ability to connect thousands of GPUs for high-speed training. The move is expected to intensify competition among technology giants seeking to dominate the AI infrastructure market.

While the financing has been confirmed by Musk, there has been no public filing or lender statement released to date. Further details on the specific hardware purchases and deployment timeline remain to be disclosed as the first deliveries approach in early 2027.
