Kenyan Cult Leader Sentenced to 200 Years for Mass Starvation Murders

A Kenyan court has sentenced cult leader Paul Mackenzie to 200 years in prison for the murders of 190 children and one adult, following a harrowing case that has shocked the nation and drawn international condemnation. The ruling, delivered today at the High Court in Mombasa, found Mackenzie responsible for orchestrating a mass starvation campaign among his followers, who were told to fast to death in order to “meet Jesus.”

Justice Diana Kavedza, presiding over the case, stated that Mackenzie bore the “primary criminal culpability” for relocating his followers to a remote forest and ordering them to cease eating. The court heard that Mackenzie’s aides violently enforced his edicts, ensuring that even children were not spared from the deadly fast. The prosecution had sought the death penalty for Mackenzie, while requesting life sentences for his accomplices.

Mackenzie, a former taxi driver and televangelist, led the Good News International Church, a group that authorities say operated as a doomsday cult. According to the court, his teachings convinced followers that the world would end in August 2023, and that salvation required abandoning the outside world and dying by starvation in the Shakahola Forest, a remote area near Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast.

During the sentencing, Mackenzie reportedly smiled and chatted with his assistant pastor, Smart Mwakalama, who was sentenced to 160 years in prison for his role in enforcing the starvation orders. In total, 28 other individuals were convicted alongside Mackenzie, including parents who forced their own children to fast. Sentences for the accomplices ranged from 10 to 160 years, reflecting their varying degrees of involvement.

The case came to light in 2023 after Kenyan authorities discovered mass graves in the Shakahola Forest, ultimately exhuming the bodies of more than 400 people believed to have died over the preceding two years. The court found that 183 of the 191 confirmed victims died from starvation, with Mackenzie’s sermons and written materials cited as key evidence of his intent and influence.

Justice Kavedza described the killings as “cold and calculated,” dismissing claims by some of the accused that the loss of their own children exonerated them from responsibility for the broader tragedy. The court noted that Mackenzie’s followers were systematically convinced that the outside world was evil and that only isolation and fasting in the forest would lead to salvation.

Mackenzie is also facing additional charges in two other courts, including terrorism, child abuse, and torture, related to the deaths of more than 200 other victims. Prosecutors allege that the cult’s operations extended beyond starvation, with reports of physical violence and threats used to enforce compliance among members.

The sentencing marks one of the harshest punishments ever handed down in Kenya for crimes involving religious cults. Human rights groups and child protection advocates have called for further investigations into how Mackenzie was able to operate for so long without intervention, and for greater oversight of religious organizations in the country.

Why it matters

The conviction and sentencing of Paul Mackenzie underscore the grave risks posed by unregulated religious movements in Kenya and the wider region. The scale of the tragedy, with more than 400 deaths uncovered and 191 confirmed murders, has prompted calls for urgent reforms in monitoring religious groups, particularly those targeting vulnerable populations such as children.

The court’s decision, led by Justice Diana Kavedza, sets a precedent for holding cult leaders and their enforcers criminally accountable for mass abuses. By imposing sentences of up to 200 years, the judiciary has signaled a strong stance against impunity for crimes committed under the guise of faith. The involvement of parents among the convicted highlights the complex dynamics of coercion and belief that enabled the massacre, as reported by multiple sources including The New York Times and AP News.

With Mackenzie still facing terrorism and child abuse charges in other courts, the case is likely to remain a focal point for legal, religious, and human rights debates in Kenya. The outcome may influence future legislation and enforcement efforts aimed at preventing similar tragedies, as authorities and civil society seek to balance religious freedom with the protection of vulnerable communities.
