Iran and Oman Agree on Strait of Hormuz Corridor, Tied to Progress of Tehran-Washington Talks

Breaking news reveals that Iran and Oman have reached a temporary agreement regarding commercial vessel passages and control over the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically significant waterway. However, the reopening of the strait for unrestrained passage remains contingent on the outcome of negotiations between Iran and the US.

The foreign ministers of Iran and Oman, Abbas Araghchi and Badr Albusaidi respectively, convened in Tehran on August 25, 2026, and disclosed a joint treaty. The agreement involves a phased plan to establish a provisional joint navigational corridor via the Strait of Hormuz, and a collaborative initiative to eliminate mines from the waterway. Further technical negotiations are anticipated to continue.

The progression towards the second phase is linked to Article 5 of the June 18 Memorandum of Understanding signed in Islamabad, with the stipulation that other Gulf littoral states be consulted. Nonetheless, Iran insists on the United States fulfilling its commitments stated in the agreement signed on the 17th of June for the strait’s reopening.

Hence, Iran’s ultimate negotiating standpoint remains unaltered, seeking official control over the Strait of Hormuz. This stance emerges even as Pakistan works to rejuvenate the stalled US-Iran negotiations and as Iran continues discussions with Oman concerning transit agreements.

Meanwhile, global economic tensions continue to escalate between Tehran and Washington. Nonetheless, an air of positivity dawns as oil prices dipped to a two-week low on the news of the strait obtaining a managed route with the concerted efforts of Iran and Oman.

In contrast, China is critical of the U.S. approach, with its foreign ministry expressing concerns about disruption to the global financial order. Consequently, the evolving geopolitical scenario around the Strait of Hormuz is directly impacting global economics and diplomacy.
