Pro-EU Protests Continue in Georgia: People Do Not Want to Give Up on the European Path

The decision of the Georgian government to suspend negotiations for accession to the European Union (EU) for four years has led to widespread protests in the country. Thousands of people took to the squares in many cities, especially the capital Tbilisi, to condemn the government’s decision and argue that the goal of integration with Europe should not be abandoned. The demonstrators sent a clear message to the government with the slogans “Europe is our future.”

Why Was the EU Membership Process Paused?
The Georgian government explained the decision to freeze membership negotiations with the European Union as “the need to focus on the country’s internal reform process.” However, the opposition and pro-EU groups claim that this decision means weakening ties with Europe. Concerns have been voiced that Georgia will deviate from its European path, especially with Russia’s increasing influence in the region.

Tbilisi Squares Are Overflowing
Tbilisi’s Freedom Square has been the scene of protests for days. Carrying Georgian and EU flags, the protesters are expressing their reaction to the government’s decision with slogans such as “Europe is our future” and “We are united for democracy.” The participation in the demonstrations from all age groups is an indication of how strong the people’s European dream is.

Opposition Reaction: “This is a Step Back”
Opposition leaders have harshly criticized the government’s decision. Opposition representatives, who say that “moving forward on the European path is not only a choice, but also a necessity,” argue that the decision should be reversed. They also state that this move runs counter to the goal of EU membership, which enjoys the support of the vast majority of Georgians.

Government’s Defense: “We Prioritize Reforms”
Despite the protests, the Georgian government has not backed down. Authorities argue that the suspension of the membership process is an opportunity to strengthen the country’s democratic and economic reforms. However, these statements have not been enough to convince pro-EU groups.

EU Reactions and Statements
European Union officials expressed their sadness at Georgia’s decision to suspend negotiations. The statement from Brussels emphasized that Georgia remaining in the reform process and not straying from the European path is critical for both the country and the region.

Regional and Global Balances
This development has brought Georgia’s strategic position back into question. Squeezed between integration with the EU on one side and Russia’s influence in the region on the other, Georgia is at a significant crossroads. The public’s reaction may determine the direction the country will take in this critical process.

Conclusion: The People’s Struggle Continues
Pro-EU protesters in Georgia say they will not leave the squares until the decision is reversed. The Georgian people, determined to keep the European dream alive, continue their struggle by saying, “Our future is in Europe.” Developments are being closely monitored not only for Georgia but also for the political balances of the region.
